Are you a smoker and want to quit? Perhaps you’ve seen the advertisements for the Stoptober campaign by the NHS to encourage people to stop smoking in October?
Now if you’re already geared up for October and have plenty of support- I wish you the very best of luck. But if you’re worrying that pure willpower alone might not be enough then I’d like to help!
Hypnosis to stop smoking
Hypnosis has an excellent level of success in helping people to stop smoking. A study published in the “New Scientist” showed that hypnotherapy was the most effective method of giving up smoking:
You are five times more likely to break the habit with hypnosis than by willpower alone and are twice as likely to remain smoke-free after two years
The reason why over the counter smoking cessation methods have significantly lower rates of success than hypnotherapy is because they do not address the psychological factors that keep you smoking. You smoke because at some point in your life, cigarettes became associated with pleasure.
Maybe it made you feel part of a group, cool or rebellious. Maybe it just provided you an excuse to focus on your thoughts or relax during a period of stress.
As a lot of my clients tell me that their smoking habit feels very automatic or that they do it on ‘autopilot’. They might reach for a cigarette as soon as they wake up, when they have a cup of tea or when they see someone else smoke.
It’s a tough habit to break because the emotional triggers, places or people that make you think about lighting up, are not something you can always ignore using mere willpower!
Your brain has already associated smoking as something that you do, just like brushing your teeth. For some people, a cigarette even feels like a best friend; something that is always reliable and available.
The nicotine trick
Both habits have that cunning ability to trick our minds into thinking that we ‘need’ them or that we won’t be ourselves if we don’t partake in them. In truth, a 20 a day long-term smoker is a slave to her nicotine fix.
Smokers might also reach mindlessly for a cigarette (or roll one) when stressed, tired or emotional. In this case the smoking habit provides some form of benefit.
Perhaps cigarettes are an excuse to take a breather, be alone with their thoughts or provide relaxation (if increased heart rate = relaxation?!)
But most smokers know the truth. There are better ways for you to get the same benefits but without destroying your health with tobacco.
At Natural Mind, I can help you forget about ‘giving up’ something so you can focus instead on all the things you’ll gain:
- improved health, fitness and a longer life
- reduced stress
- better relationships
- better skin, nails and hair
- more money for the important things in life!
And if you have kids, well it’s a no-brainer really isn’t it?
Put simply- if you really want to stop smoking without putting on weight or feeling irritable, then hypnotherapy may well be the answer.
